High St Development

Plans exist to redevelop the south side of the High Street, adding to the usual mix of shops and flats a large cinema (possibly seating 1,600) and a supermarket. The diagram below is an artist's impression of the area:

So far, this plan has been approved by the council - 'The Sustainable Development Committee' - on the 18th Jan 2001, and is going on to the Department of the Environment.

Key features:

  • 3900 square metre supermarket - only 10% smaller than the nearby Osterley 'Tesco', which is big.
  • 1,600 seater cinema - there is some doubt about the parking and traffic facilities required to service this.
  • new shops and houses/flats

This would lead to the wholesale removal of the small industries currently on the site; car repair yards and the like may not be everyone's cup of tea, but personally I'd rather have the ad-hoc small industries that suit Brentford rather than some corporate takeover remodelling.
